Acer has told TechRadar that it does not feel AMD's XGP external graphics project offers a good enough user experience, although it remains interested in the product.
Somewhat strangely, Acer was expected to release a branded ATI Radeon external graphics card to take advantage of XGP this year, but that appears to have been put on the backburner.
XGP was AMD's attempts to offer laptops users with an external discrete graphics cards, meaning that users could offer a massive graphical boost to their laptops when power was less of an issue.
AMD VP Leslie Sobon told TechRadar a few weeks ago: "Acer will be coming out with an external Radeon graphics card and when you plug that in you get discrete capability, we're really excited about it.
"I don't know If Acer has announced when it's coming out, I don't know myself, but it's coming out this year where they will have this XGP solution..."
Not the best
However, in response to TechRadar's probings about a release date Acer responded with a less than flattering description of XGP, even though it has already used the port part of the technology in its Ferrari laptop.
"Acer is interested in this solution, but at the moment it doesn't offer the best user experience," said a spokesman for the company.
Now obviously, TechRadar contacted AMD to get to the bottom of this, and the company responded by saying: "AMD has been working closely with Acer to bring XGP to market.
"The Acer Ferrari One, now available for purchase, does include the XGP port. AMD demonstrated a prototype solution with this notebook at International CES 2010 in Las Vegas at the beginning of this year.
"A shipping date for the XGP unit has not been announced."

Acer Aspire 4820T review
Acer released the Timeline series last year to critical acclaim, but while the range boasted excellent portability, performance was slightly lacking. The new TimelineX range rectifies this and, despite a few usability issues, the Acer Aspire 4820T simply has it all.
The latest in cutting-edge technology is present, with an Intel Core i5 processor joined by 4096MB of DDR3 memory. Performance is stunning and you'll be able to run the most resource-intensive applications and programs with ease.
Our review unit featured an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, providing the level of graphical performance we'd expect from a gaming laptop. However, retail units will feature a lower-powered 5470 chip, producing roughly half the power of the aforementioned. You'll still be able to edit photos and HD movies, but the latest games won't run quite so smoothly.
Slim chassis
This level of power is particularly impressive considering the size of the laptop. At only 31mm thick, it's easy to slip into a bag and the machine also weighs just 2.1kg – meaning it only narrowly misses out on ultraportable status.
Despite the use of powerful components, an excellent 428-minutes of battery life are on offer between charges, meaning true all-day usability.
Acer has achieved this using low-powered components, such as LED backlighting for the panel and a hard drive that allegedly uses 40 per cent less power than standard drives. At 500GB, storage is nevertheless still highly capable of containing all your files and folders.
The 14-inch screen has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution and is sharp and bright. It features a very reflective Super-TFT screen coating, however, making it a little irritating to use in bright conditions.
A brushed aluminium design is used on the lid to great effect, with silver plastics adding to the effect on the inside.
The keyboard is one of the laptop's very few weaknesses. It's poorly mounted into the chassis and this means it's fairly spongy and very noisy to use. The typing action is comfortable enough, however, and doesn't take too long to get used to.
Elsewhere, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet allow fast networking, while a Dolby Home Theatre system simulates 5.1 surround sound through your headphones. Three USB ports and an HDMI-out – for connecting to an external monitor or TV – round out the strong specification.

Acer and Gateway launch new range of computers
Acer and Gateway launched their newest range of PCs, laptops and servers at the Sydney Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour.
The Acer range targets a broad market including SMBs and the Gateway line will strictly aim for consumers.
The new Acer Veriton 490 and 680 series PCs are for the commercial market and are made of environmentally friendly materials. The 680 uses Intel Core i7 processors and a Q57 chipset. Prices for the 490 series start from $1069 and 680 series from $1129.
The Acer Aspire 5820T, also named the Timeline X series, is designed to be a slimline device for home, school and office users on the move. The vendor claims it can run for up to eight hours on a single charge and it costs $1599.
Acer’s Aspire 5943G and 8943G have 15.6-inch and 18.4-inch screens, respectively. The 8943G’s screen supports Full HD 1080P resolutions and runs with an Intel Core i7 processor as well as up to 16GB of DDR3 memory and an ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. The 5943G costs $2799 while the 8943G is priced at $2999.
The AR110 F1, AT310 F1, AT350 F1 tower servers and the AR360 F1 and AR380 F1 rack servers are the latest additions to the Acer range. The AT350 F1 provides 18 DDR3 memory slots for up to 144GB of RAM. It has two Gigabit Ethernet ports and the ability to take up to eight SAS or Serial ATA drives.
The rack server models use 2.5-inch hot-swappable hard drive bays for data storage and have 18 DDR3 memory slots along with Intel Xeon 5500/5600 series processors. Prices start from $849 for the AR110 F1 and go up to $3365 for the AR380 F1.
The Acer Aspire 5741 series of laptops feature 15.6-inch screens and use DDR3 RAM with an option for a built-in 3G modem. Pricing starts from $899. The Aspire 5745G supports up to 16GB of DDDR3 RAM over four DIMM slots. It supports Intel Core i5 and i7 CPUs and users can expect to pay $1399.
The cow-patch branded Gateway computers come with a range of designs aimed at general consumers. The ID59C is considered by the vendor to be its hero laptop thanks to its 15.6-inch screen, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor and Intel Core i7-620M. A 640GB hard drive provides storage space and the unit’s pricing starts at $2099.
The LT, EC and NV ranges of notebooks offer built-in 3G modems as an extra with the EC sporting an 11.6-inch form factor and Intel ULV CPUs.
The Gateway ZX range of desktop PCs are powered by Intel Pentium Dual Core CPUs and have 20-inch displays. The all-in-one PC can come with a multi-touch enabled screen.

Acer's entry level Aspire, the 5741, features Intel Core I processors, has a high-resolution 15.6" widescreen display, and sports a mesh-patterned exterior that protects against smudges and scratches. It also featured a full-size Acer FineTip keyboard with numeric keypad and large keys for comfortable typing, along with a multi-gesture touchpad that lets you easily scroll, pinch, rotate and flip through web pages, files and images.
Chris Osborne, Senior Product Manager, Acer Computer Australia believes the entry level Aspire provides a lot of options with great value: "The Aspire 5741 makes the latest technology affordable to the masses, while making no compromise on value."
The second notebook revealed by the company is the Aspire 5745G, a 15.6-inch LED-backlit notebook that offers a full selection of Intel's Core processor range and supports Intel Turbo Boost Technology on i5/i7 models.

Acer Aspire 5551G, 5553G and 7551G keep the Phenom II X3 and X4 leaks flowing
Ah, now we get it. Clearly AMD has a few mobile chips in the backroom that it has yet to inform us about, and unfortunately for the fine folks in Sunnyvale, it seems as if their partner firms aren't being quite so hush-hush. Just hours after discovering a quad-core Phenom II X4 within Dell's new Inspiron M501R, along comes a spate of Acer Aspire machines with -- you guessed it -- Phenom II X4 and X3 chips within. The 15.6-inch 5551G / 5553G and 17.3-inch 7551G are all listed now at Amazon's German portal, with the X3 N830 clocked at 2.1GHz and the X4 N930 chip humming along at an even 2GHz. The cheapest of the bunch is listed at right around €668 ($870), though you'll have to dig into that source link for specifics. Fret not -- we get the impression that each of these will be headed stateside just as soon as AMD sees fit to officially unveil its not-so-secret stash of new silicon.
Acer leaks AMD mobile tri-core
Earlier today we stumbled upon Acer's Aspire 5553G, a 15.6-inch laptop based on AMD's quad-core Phenom II X4 N930. A few more listings of upcoming Acer models with the new Phenom were brought to our attention by one of our colleagues and it turns out the new quad will also be featured in the 17-inch Aspire 7551G.
However, it also appears that Acer will also introduce a three-core part on new Aspire models, both in the 17-inch and 15.6-inch flavor. The Phenom X3 N830 is clocked at 2.1GHz and it should end up a bit cheaper than the quad. It will be featured alongside HD 5470 graphics in both the Aspire 7551G and 5551G, but on the upside tri-core models will end up around €100 cheaper. You can check out the listings here.
Although AMD's mobile quads and tri-cores are unlikely to match the performance delivered by Intel's Core-series quads, it's worth noting that the price difference is staggering. Judging by these early listings, laptops based on AMD quads will end up around €150 cheaper than similar models powered by Intel's entry level Core i7 parts. As for the tri-cores, they sound like an equally good deal, as they will probably be available in the €600 to €700 price range.
It's an interesting proposition. For example, consumers will be able to choose between Intel's 2.13GHz Core i3 with integrated graphics and a similarly clocked Phenom II X3 with an extra core. Intel will offer superior power efficiency due to the 32nm process, while AMD will offer superior graphics and potentially better performance in threaded applications.

Acer's mobile Phenom II Aspire range leaks
YESTERDAY IT WAS Dell; today it's Acer's turn to have its upcoming notebooks leaked ahead of the launch, although this time around it doesn't appear to be any fault of Acer. Amazon.de has helpfully posted a couple of new mobile Phenom II powered models with various configuration options. The models we're looking at are the Aspire 5551G, 5553G and 7551G.
The 555xG models feature a 15.6-inch display while the 7551G models have 17.3-inch displays, so these are not machines you’d want to carry around with you on a long business trip. The most basic models are the 5551G-N834G64Mn and the 7551G-N834G32Mn and both share the same AMD Phenom II X3 N830 CPU which is clocked at 2.1GHz. We can’t offer you much more detail on the CPU at the moment, but all should hopefully become clear once AMD actually launches the mobile Phenom II processors.
These two machines also share the same ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470 GPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and built-in optical drive. The 15.6-inch model comes with a 640GB hard drive, while the 17.3-inch model has to make do with a 320GB drive. Both models are available in silver and have a numerical keybpad as well as an off-centre touchpad.
Next up we have the 5553G-N934G64Mn, the 7551G-N934G32Mn and the 7551G-N934G64Bn. These three models are all built around the AMD Phenom II X4 N930 CPU which has a clock speed of 2GHz. Again, all four models come with 4GB of DDR3 memory, but the graphics card has been upgraded to an ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650. The 7551G-N934G32Mn gets stuck with the 320GB hard drive, while the other two models come with a 640GB drive. The 7551G-N934G64Bn also gets the added bonus of a Blu-ray drive. The 5553G-N934G64Mn comes in black while the other two models are available in silver.
In terms of ports you’re looking at a D-sub and an HDMI connector, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a pair of audio jacks for a headset and a mic, a memory card reader and three USB 2.0 ports. You do of course also get a webcam, unspecified 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity and a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium thrown in for good measures. The 15.6-inch models feature 1366x768 displays and weight in at 2.6kg, while the 17.3-inch models offer a higher screen resolution of 1600x900 and appear to weigh about 3.3kg. The battery life isn’t anything to write home about, as it’ll be sub 3 hours which is pretty pathetic, although we should hopefully see some good performance from AMD’s new mobile processors, especially in threaded applications.
As far as pricing is concerned, the 5551G-N834G64Mn will set you back €668.50 ($871), with the higher specced 5553G-N934G64Mn going for €764.50 ($996). The 7551G-N834G32Mn is also priced at €668.50 ($871), while the 7551G-N934G32Mn again comes in at €764.50 ($996). This leaves the 7551G-N934G64Bn, which is the most expensive model on offer and is set to retail at €860.50 ($1,122). As far as triple-core and quad-core mobile CPU’s are concerned, these are some pretty attractive price points, despite the lacklustre battery life.
Update: We've managed to dig out the cache and the TDP for these new CPU's as well. The X3's will have 1.5MB of cache, while the X4's gets 2MB, in other words you're looking at 512KB of cache per CPU core. We were surprised at the TDP, if it's indeed correct, as both the X3's and X4's are meant to have a mere 35W TDP. This puts them on equal level as Intel's dual core mobile Core i3, i5 and i5 processors with integrated graphics. You do of course have to add the TDP of AMD's M880G chipset, since AMD doesn't have the IGP built into the CPU as yet. This leads us to think that Acer have put fairly basic batteries with a low Watt hour rating which is at least one of the reasons why the battery life won't exceed 3h.

Acer Liquid E to be Priced at $49.99 from Rogers
The Acer Liquid E, which will be launching in June on the Rogers network, has just been priced at $49.99 with a three-year contract. That's right, $49.99! Damn good price if you ask me. Off-contract, the phone will be costing customers $349.99, which is still a very reasonable price. It is nice to see that someone still knows how to price an off-contract phone affordably. Good job Rogers.
For those unfamiliar with the device, the Acer Liquid E has a Snapdragon 768 MHz processor, 512 ROM, and 256 MB RAM. The phone has five home screen panels, Quick Contacts to go between the phone’s contacts and social networks, Live wallpapers, a new keyboard layout, and a 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen. The handset also has a 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, up to 32GB microSD slot, FM radio, and a custom UI built by Acer. Overall, it is very slick device. I know if I lived in Canada I would be all over this.

Acer Aspire 5740G Laptop
Acer Aspire notebooks sport stylish looks, are ruggedly built and offer good value for money. The Acer Aspire 5740G is a desktop replacement with all these qualities, and is suitable for a SOHO environment and home entertainment.
Design and build quality
As far as looks and design are concerned, there isn’t anything really new about this laptop, as it sports the usual Acer Aspire-like metallic navy-blue exterior with dark-grey interiors. Nonetheless, it is stylish. The interiors have a matt finish, making the laptop scratch-resistant, except for the lid and screen frame, which are glossy, hence prone to dust and finger prints.
The chiclet keyboard, multi-touch touchpad and the additional feature, the numeric keypad, are all comfortable to use. Typing on the keyboard, with large and well-spaced keys is very convenient and smooth. The keys are properly placed and the Enter and Shift keys are of regular size. Even the physical hotkeys and buttons are aptly located between the keyboard and speaker-grill.
The build quality of the laptop is excellent, a full five-on-five. So basically, there’s nothing to be concerned about in terms of looks, ergonomics and build quality. The one thing that might be slightly daunting is the 2.8 Kg hefty weight, only if you want to carry it around regularly. Not that it is meant for the purpose, but, this laptop is not something you want to lug to work everyday - it won’t be convenient.
Features
There are three variants of this laptop, two of which feature Intel Core i5 processors and the third one an Intel Core i3. The one we tested has an Intel Core i3 330M processor, which is clocked at 2.13 GHz. Though, it is an entry-level processor from Intel’s new line of Core processors, it performs well to effectively replace a mainstream desktop PC, especially because it has 4 GB DD3 RAM. Although the present 320 GB hard drive is sufficient for a SOHO setup and multimedia content, people who have a huge collection of music, videos and games might fall short of space. This brings us to the most striking point of this laptop, the presence of a good discrete graphics chip, the ATI Radeon HD 5470. Now, with all this hardware, this laptop can handle demanding applications, such as designing suites, seamlessly. Our recommendation is to opt for a more powerful processor, the Core i5, and a roomy 500 GB hard drive. This way you will not only have a more powerful desktop replacement, which completes tasks much quicker, but also be able to store more data, if you happen to be a movie buff or gaming fan. Nevertheless, considering the 15.6-inch screen, near-3 Kg weight and the core hardware of this particular machine, we’d say it’s a good entry-level desktop replacement.
When it comes to features, this laptop offers a good blend, in addition to gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi N, the laptop has a dial-up modem. Also, being a multimedia laptop, it has multi-channel audio, and you’ll find a line-in jack next to the headphone and mic jacks. Other plus points include the presence of dedicated volume controls and a numeric keypad. Display options include an HDMI port and a VGA port, and, the screen is glossy with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1366 x 768). There are 3 USB ports, a webcam, a memory card reader, DVD-writer and Kensington lock slot. Finally, the machine is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and McAfee Internet Security (60-day trial)

Acer Aspire X3900 Review
The Acer Aspire X3900 is a small form factor desktop PC with a powerful Intel Core i3 processor and an abundant feature set. It's great for a space-saving home or office computer and entertainment tuned users.
Acer Aspire X3900: Design
The Acer Aspire X3900 has a mini-ITX form factor, and the cabinet measures 265x100x352mm: significantly smaller than your traditional desktop PCs, even smaller than the HP Compaq dc5800s. The Aspire X3900's cabinet doesn't weigh too much and it can be easily carried around in one hand. The X3900's cabinet has an all-black exterior and it comes with a cabinet lock to prevent access to its innards. Acer has done a good job with distributing ports around the X3900 cabinet's front and back.
The Acer Aspire X3900's optical drive pops out vertically at the front; and just below the drive bay is a flap which hides an abundance of ports: five USB ports, FireWire port, multicard reader, CF port and audio jacks. The power on-off button resides in the form of a transparent plastic strip along the cabinet's top and right edge that glows blue underneath when you switch on the Aspire X3900.
The cabinet has grilled exhaust vents at the top, side and back - enough to dissipate heat efficiently. At the Acer Aspire X3900's back lies 5.1 channel audio support ports, HDMI, eSATA, SPDIF, VGA, PS2 mouse and keyboard ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and four USB ports. That's a lot of ports!
The Acer Aspire X3900's cabinet is cramped on the inside, due to its small dimensions. Accessing the RAM slots, for example, isn't very easy. But the wires are neatly directed around the motherboard and there's no haphazard criss-cross of wires leading to clutter inside the desktop cabinet.
Acer Aspire X3900: Hardware Specs
The Acer Aspire X3900 has an Intel Core i3-530 2.93GHz processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), 320GB 7200rpm hard drive, and onboard Intel GMA HD graphics. Obvious advantages over older Intel GMA graphics is less heat inside the cabinet and better cooling. But not only good onboard graphics, the Aspire X3900 desktop has a very good basic hardware building blocks. There's no wireless connectivity, but Gigabit Ethernet, eSATA, HDMI, SPDIF, FireWire and CF port. The Acer Aspire X3900 also supports 5.1 channel audio - great to take your home audio experience to the next level.
Apart from the cabinet, the Acer Aspire X3900 desktop PC also bundles in a keyboard, mouse, and two speakers. It comes with an 18.5-inch monitor if you're interested; however our review unit didn't come with one. The Acer AX3900 desktop comes with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. In terms of internal hardware, the only thing the Aspire X3900 lacks is maybe a dedicated graphics card. But other than that, Acer has done a great job of packing in every feature and port you would want on a home desktop PC.

Acer Aspire 7104 Review
I needed one with Windows XP and at least 512 MB of memory. There were other things I also wanted that would make my job easier. I wanted a 17" monitor. I also wanted an integrated keyboard, meaning I wanted it to have a keyboard like a regular desktop keyboard.
I found a pretty great deal through a shopping channel. For $1298 I was able to get a laptop that met my specifications, an all in one printer, router, and a wireless keyboard and mouse. It also included an extended 3 year warranty.
I was also able to make that $1298 in 6 easy payments. Sounded like a terrific deal to me.
I bought an Acer Aspire 7104.

When purchasing this model I was worried that it was not an AMD processor or a Dual Core. Fortunately the processor has not been a problem.
I can run multiple applications and surf various web pages at one time.
I use my laptop for working at home. I can have the applications for work up and when it is slow I am able to play games or surf the web, read emails, etc.
The memory in my old laptop was only 256 plus an added memory chip of 128. I was having some problems with it not being enough memory for being able to run the applications for my work and being able to surf at the same time. The Acer Aspire allows me to do that.
So this model definitely has its pros.
It also has its cons.
The speakers are not half as good as the ones in my older laptop. I have tried adding on external speakers and it still does not sound as well or as loud.
The video card it has does not allow me to play Buena Vista games. This was a disappointment. Knowing the video card is not good enough to play certain games. I wish I had of known that beforehand as I like to play games.
I found a pretty great deal through a shopping channel. For $1298 I was able to get a laptop that met my specifications, an all in one printer, router, and a wireless keyboard and mouse. It also included an extended 3 year warranty.
I was also able to make that $1298 in 6 easy payments. Sounded like a terrific deal to me.
I bought an Acer Aspire 7104.
